Birth Control-Which is the Best?
Birth control is just as important for men as it is for women. In most
cases men feel that it is the women’s job to take care of that. It is very
essential for men and women to understand the basics of birth control and
all of the options . In order to act responsible when it comes to having
sex. Here you will find all the options and some interesting facts behind
every one.
Barrier Birth Control
Condoms-these are used by men to prevent pregnancy and it will even
protect against sexually transmitted diseases. They are inexpensive
sometimes free at clinics. They are 99% safe and for that 1% it is a good
idea to use other forms of birth control at the same time. They need to be
kept in a cool dry place away from sharp objects, in order for them to work
properly.
Female condoms-The female condoms is good for those whose partner
does not like wearing condoms and for those who want to control the birth
control. Basically it works the same as a condom. But it fits in the women
vagina capturing semen. The male condom may also interfere with sexual
sensation whereas the female condom does not. It is less effective about 95%
against pregnancy and STDs. It cost app the same as regular condoms.
Diaphragm-this is a rubber dome that fits over the cervix and must
always be used with a spermicide every time you have intercourse. You have
to be fitted for it and must be shown how to insert it and out to take it
out. Diaphragms must be inserted 6 hours before sex and should stay in place
for about 6-8 hours after intercourse. This will not protect you against
STDs and will cost you about $20 and $10 for spermicide.
Hormonal Birth Control
The Pill-the pill is the most popular. They can contain estrogen and
progesterone. They work primarily by preventing ovulation. It started out in
the 60s and have been working since. There are some side effects such as
blood clots, chest pain, headaches, abdominal pain, and eye problems. It can
also effect your sexual drive and emotional status. There are some benefits
to the pill such as it reduces menstrual cramps, having regular periods,
improve acne, and it can reduce the risk of cancer. They are 99% effective
and do not ward of and sexually transmitted diseases. The cost is
approximately $20 per month.
Depo-provera- with this treatment you will have to get a shot in the
behind every 6 months that releases a hormone similar to the pill. This
hormone keeps your ovaries from releasing eggs so basically makes it
impossible to get pregnant. Most women do not get their period during this
so the money you save from buying tampons or pads you can use it to buy
condoms to use at the same time. It is only 95% effective on preventing
pregnancy and will cost about %40 dollars each shot. This does not ward off
diseases.
Norplant- This is 6 plastic implants that are put under the skin in
your arm. Where hormones are released constantly for 5 years. The insertion
is painless except for a prick of the numbing needle. It is cost that is
painful. It is $600 for insertion and the removal fee is $150. This will not
prevent you from getting any STDs.
Natural Birth Control
Rhythm Methods-This method involves knowing when your body is
ovulating and when you are most likely to get pregnant. The trick is to
avoid having sex in that time. You can do this by taking you temperature
every morning(your temp increases when you are ovulating), examining your
cervical mucus and charting your period. The average women ovulates for 7
days the middle of each period. It will only give you a 50/50 chance of not
getting pregnant.
Withdrawal- is exactly as it sounds. When the men feels the need to
ejaculate, he pulls out his penis so the semen does not enter the vagina. It
requires self-control and even if he does pull out before there is enough
sperm in pre-ejaculate to cause pregnancy.
Abstinence- this is the only form of natural birth control that is
100% effective. As the saying goes "just say no". It involves will power not
to have sex at all.
If at all you have any questions about any of these please feel free to
get back to me or go talk to your doctor. Make sure you know everything
before making a decision on which birth control to choose. Don’t be
embarrassed . It is a very natural thing to discuss birth control.
